It’s 1927. Daring pilots from around the world are pitted against each other in a life and death challenge. The prize, $25,000 and aviation immortality. The challenge, be the first to fly nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean. One by one, teams are crashing, burning, and dying. Some simply disappear at sea, never to be heard from again.
With youthful daring and style, an American air mail pilot emerges with a bold plan. He will build a sleek, efficient monoplane and fly from New York to Paris, alone.
At sunrise, on May 20, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh climbs into his shining, silver, Ryan aircraft. He departs New York City in terrible weather, heading east over the Atlantic, east to Paris. Ahead lie 3600 miles and what seems to be certain death. What happened next would bring the world to its feet. After 33 ½ grueling hours Lindbergh lands triumphant in Paris, France. Lindbergh’s flight ignites the imagination and hope of the world. It is the dawn of aviation.
Today, 82 years later, a team of devoted and visionary, craftsmen, pilots, and businessmen are busy building an exact replica of Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis. This replica has a grand destiny. Its fate is to re-trace and re-enact Lindbergh’s epic flight across the Atlantic, with a lone pilot. |
